چکیده

P2P-TV is an emerging alternative to classical television broadcast systems. Leveraging possibilities offered by the Internet, several companies offer P2P-TV services to their customers. The overwhelming majority of these systems, however, is of closed nature, offering little insight on their traffic properties. For a better understanding of the P2PTV landscape, we performed measurement experiments in France, Japan, Spain, and Romania, using different commercial applications. By using multiple measurement points in different locations of the world, our results can paint a global picture of the measured networks, inferring their main properties. More precisely, we focus on the level of collaboration between peers, their location and the effect of the traffic on the networks. Our results show that there is no fairness between peers and that is an important issue for the scalability of P2P-TV systems. Moreover, hundreds of Autonomous Systems are involved in the P2P-TV traffic and it points out the lack of localityaware mechanisms for these systems. The geographic location of peers testifies the wide spread of these applications in Asia and highlights their worldwide usage. & 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Measuring P2p-tv Systems on Both Sides of the World

In this paper, we present our P2P-TV measurement experiment performed in France and in Japan. By using multiple measurement points in different locations of the world, we are able to get a global view of the measured P2P networks and we can infer their main properties. More precisely, we focus on the location of peers and the effect of the P2P-TV traffic on the networks. Our results shows that ...

Characterizing Locality-aware P2P Streaming

Peer-to-peer (P2P) live streaming systems have been increasingly popular and successful in today’s Internet, which provide large collections of video channels to millions of users at low server costs. The large volumes of P2P streaming traffic are exceeding those incurred by BitTorrent-like file sharing applications, threatening huge traffic relay cost to the Internet service providers (ISPs). ...

1Mbps P2P Streaming: A Global Measurement Study

High definition video is defining a new age of peer-to-peer (P2P) video streaming over the public Internet. Simultaneously achieving a resolution-scale upgrade, e.g., providing 1Mbps streaming to a commercial scale of customers, presents new challenges. In contrast to previous measurement studies that crawl commercial applications like a black box, we present a new approach: fine-granular, cont...

Qoe Analysis of a Peer-to-peer Television System

Peer-to-peer (P2P) TV technology is seen as an emerging alternative to the current systems of providing TV channels and video services over the Internet. However, little information is available on users’ Quality of Experience (QoE) on P2P systems. We discuss the general problems behind subjective assessments of P2P streaming, and present a discussion on the factors affecting QoE for P2P TV. We...

Understanding P2P-TV systems through on field measurements

In this paper, we consider two popular peer-to-peer TV (P2P-TV) systems: PPLive, one of the today most widely used P2P-TV systems, and Joost, a promising new generation application. Besides the traditional measurements like the amount of generated traffic for signaling and data transmission, the novel contribution of the paper consists investigating the content distribution mechanisms. In parti...
